Opera is a freeware web browser that is mostly famous for the fact that it is available on a wide variety of platforms. This Internet browser is constantly updated and improved, thus making it quite popular among users.

Opera Beta now supports called DNS over HTTPS (DoH). This is a privacy and security feature that encrypts DNS traffic to prevent spying and common attacks such as eavesdropping and manipulation of DNS data.

As you may already know, the Opera browser is based on Chromium but the company decided to select Cloudflare as its partner for testing purposes. All DNS queries will run through Cloudflare servers when the feature is enabled in the Opera web browser.

Any of the requests that Cloudflare cannot handle are still handled by the local DNS server. This is to allow the browser to connect to local resources and handle the requests itself.

How do I enable the DNS over HTTPS feature in Opera?

One thing you should remember is that the DNS over HTTPS feature is not enabled by default in Opera 65. If you want to enable this feature, you need to do the following:

  • Launch Opera
  • Search for the following address in the browser‘s search bar:
    • ://flags/#opera-doh
  • Change the Secure DNS (DNS over HTTPS) flag to Enabled
  • Restart the Opera browser
  • Keep in mind that the DNS over HTTPS is still in an experimental phase. While testing did reveal that it worked efficiently, there is no telling what issues may be found in the future.

Using it for prolonged periods of time is not recommended, and users are advised to turn it off whenever they don’t actually need it.
