Google’s Chrome browser is one of the most used browsers in the world today, but that doesn’t get it off the hook when it comes to technical issues.

Among the issues that make for a frustrating experience is when Gmail won’t load in Chrome on Windows 10.

This is a common problem, but there are other occurrences in which the issue is signaled, caused by outdated Gmail settings.

Being able to solve issues in a timely manner can make a huge difference, especially if you use it for work.

Some other users reported that they can not receive emails on Gmail, which, as you might assume, can stop you from using the service entirely.

What can I do when Gmail is not working on Chrome?

  • Try another browser
  • Preliminary troubleshooting steps
  • Browse incognito or in private
  • Clear your cache and cookies
  • Check browser extensions or applications
  • Check Gmail Labs
  • Check if security software is blocking Gmail from loading
  • Reset your browser (Chrome)
  • Flush socket pools
  • Manually disable extensions
  • 1. Try another browser

If you notice that the Gmail issue persists no matter what you do, then you should start using a  different browser instead.

One great alternative to Google Chrome is Opera, as it is also built using the Chromium engine, but it is designed to be far less resource-intensive.

More so, the vast library of addons is filled with tools that can help better integrate Gmail into the browser, allowing you quicker and better access to it, along with several improved tools.

Additionally, the built-in VPN, ad-blocker, and tracker blocker will allow you to send and receive emails privately and securely.

    2. Preliminary troubleshooting

    • Restart your device and check if it helps
    • Try using a different browser
    • Remove or rename Google Chrome in the cache and check if it loads
    • Turn off extensions and restart your browser to see if one of them causes Gmail not to load in Chrome
    • Ensure you have the latest Chrome version, by clicking the gear icon and choose About Google Chrome to open a window listing the version number and see if an update is available

    3. Browse incognito or in private

    • On your computer, open Chrome.
    • At the top right, click More New Incognito Window.
    • A new window appears. In the top corner, check for the Incognito icon
    • You can also use a keyboard shortcut to open an Incognito window: press Ctrl + Shift + N.

Note: If you see the dreaded Something went wrong message even in Incognito, you will need to follow the guide linked in this note for resolving it.

    4. Clear your cache and cookies

    • On your computer, open Chrome.
    • At the top right, click More
    • Click More tools > Clear browsing data.
    • At the top, choose a time range. To delete everything, select All time.

Expert Tip: Some PC issues are hard to tackle, especially when it comes to corrupted repositories or missing Windows files. If you are having troubles fixing an error, your system may be partially broken. We recommend installing Restoro, a tool that will scan your machine and identify what the fault is.

    5. Check browser extensions or applications

Sometimes these add-ons or extensions on Chrome can prevent Gmail from loading. You can temporarily turn them off one by one and use Gmail again to see if that solves the problem.

Try using Gmail incognito or in-private browsing, or without extensions. Try temporarily turning off these extensions and applications one by one, then using Gmail again to see if that solves the problem.

    6. Check Gmail Labs

If you have labs turned on, open Gmail via this link, and if it helps, disable the labs one after another to find out which one is causing Gmail not to load.

    To disable, do this:

    • Open Gmail.
    • In the top right, click Settings
    • Click Settings.
    • Click the Labs tab.
    • Next to any labs you have enabled, select Disable.
    • At the bottom of the page, click Save Changes.

    7. Check if security software is blocking Gmail from loading

Sometimes security software like a firewall or antivirus could cause Gmail not to load in Windows 10. Check if Windows Defender is blocking it, and disable it then try loading Gmail again. You can also leave Defender on and turn off the cloud portion instead.

    8. Reset your browser (Chrome)

    • Open Chrome
    • Click More
    • Click Settings
    • Click Advanced
    • Under the Reset section, click Reset
    • Confirm by clicking reset settings button

Note: This process resets the default search engine back to Google, the homepage and tabs, new tab page, pinned tabs, content settings, cookies and site data, extensions and themes. The new settings will also apply across all devices you’re signed into.

    9. Flush socket pools

    • Open Google chrome and type chrome://net-internals in the URL bar
    • Click Export button
    • Scroll down to Sockets
    • Select Flush Socket Pools
    • Try loading Gmail again

    10. Manually disable extensions

    • Open User Data folder.
    • Open file Preferences in a text editor.
    • Scroll down to the line starting the settings blocks.
    • Each of the extensions will have its own block inside the settings block, so to disable them, change their states from 1 to 0.

To disable extensions, you need to run Chrome with the disable extensions command line option.

Actually, the steps above may not actually disable extensions but rather hide them, such that Chrome thinks none of them are installed.
